Fire in vacant Ballard Blossom building

9:30am: Lauri Miller is at the scene of the fire, and tells My Ballard that the fire appears to be out. Still no confirmation on what started the blaze, but we’ll update when Seattle Fire releases that information.

Update 9:10am: Ballard resident Eric sent us the below photo of the fire, which he passed on his walk to work this morning.

Original: Seattle Fire is currently responding to a fire in the vacant Ballard Blossom building on NW Market Street.

Both east and westbound lanes are blocked on Market Street — SDOT recommends taking alternate routes.

No injuries have been reported, and the cause of the fire is unclear — we’ll update when we learn more.

  1. Wouldn’t surprise me one bit if it had something to do with the illegal encampment that popped up behind it once the building was vacated

    1. I’ll bet there is a direct correlation between the two.

And OT-congrats to Boris Johnson for his victory yesterday! Nice to see Corbyn sent off.

      1. B.H. I didn’t want my homeland to leave the EU so I am not happy about the Conservative victory. Being Welsh I was hopping for a Plaid Cymru victory in Wales and then home rule but it looks like SNP might achieve that first.

          1. B.H. haha, interesting. Are you from the UK?
Under home rule for Wales, the Welsh would hopefully vote for Wales to be a member country of the EU. The Plaid Cymru party is pro EU, Same goes for SNP. Both countries, if they had independence, would be countries in the E.U. So in that respect it is not “mutually exclusive.”
I apologize to everyone here as this is not the post to talk about UK politics.

    2. In urge you to grow a set and tell it like it IS. For God’s sakes, do you feel it perhaps was oily rags spontaneously combusting? Maybe birds playing with matches? The time HAS come to call it like it is, begin ridding our area of not only drug fueled felons, but the enablers AND the same old politicians who foist this crap onto the folks attempting to eke out a living and enjoy life.

  2. let’s see…survival crime? warming fire? the city just loves its vagrant population so much and will not look at the situation realistically, like a parent with 6000 problem children…”nooo, not Billy, he’s a good boy and wouldn’t do that”

  3. $10 it was a homeless reveler that started it. This section of Market is the panhandler section. Got chased by one of the wackos while heading to the Sip and Ship. They have break-ins and human waste issues all the time. Coddling mentally ill people isn’t compassion.

  4. Controlled practice fires for the fire department. Just like with kitchen and things down the street. Always ends up being an electrical fire by coincidence that no one can seem to explain?….. when someone dies or there’s a person in the building they know within 24 hours what caused the fire.
    * it also streamlines the process for demolition for the developer.

        1. I’m liberal and think enabling homelessness is egregiously irresponsible. Condoning bad behavior and disregarding mental illness that proves to be a danger to themselves and society (see above). Seattle wants to look line saviours and coddle wackos under a feel good social justice view that keeps drug addicts, addicted. Repeat offenders released or not jailed at all with non-mandatory mental health counseling.
There’s no way you can be a Sawant or Strauss voter and also actually help this situation. He’s a Mike O’Brien clone. Expect more of these incidents.
So maybe the feeling of hate you feel for the homeless should be absorbed be you. It’s your policy.

          1. i am a Conservative, I don’t hate the homeless. There but for the Grace of Gods go I.

  5. any updates on this fire or will it simply be disappeared since it seems very likely it was “person experiencing homelessness” fire?

    1. Sweep it under the rug since it was only private property damage and therefore inconsequential compared to the needs of the fine, valuable community members that set the fire in the first place. Arson by a valuable community member = less damaging that evil capitalist property owners.
