The controversial landmarks board, which established the old Ballard Denny’s building as a landmark, will consider a nomination tomorrow for the historic Sorrento Hotel on First Hill. Some are using the occasion to make a distinction between the two buildings. “Now THIS is a real landmark. That ugly relic from a happily forgotten era of architecture on 15th and Market is NOT,” writes one commenter who believes the Sorrento and the old Denny’s are not in the same ballpark. This triggered quite the debate on the Big Blog over the definition of a landmark. “Sorry, but even before I lived in Seattle, I recognized the Ballard Denny’s building more than I did that hotel,” writes another commenter. Either way, it’s a safe bet that the board will nominate the Sorrento.
