As grocery prices soar, more people are turning to their own garden to grow fruits and veggies. Unfortunately not everyone has a yard and more folks are trying to get a plot of land at a local p-patch. With just 100 spots in Ballard, we’re one of the neighborhoods with the highest demand. The city’s p-patch manager, Rich Macdonald, told Crosscut that the wait could be “at least two years.” He said that he knew this year was going to be different when the season started and most p-patches were already full, a definite change from previous years. Instead of waiting, some are finding little pieces of land at work, like at Homestreet Bank here in Ballard.
