Controversial activist to speak at Ballard church

Peace activist and anti-war protester Cindy Sheehan has been invited to speak at Trinity United Methodist Church later this month. Sheehan made headlines in 2005 by camping outside of President Bush’s Crawford, Texas home with a contingent of Veterans for Peace after her son Casey was killed in Iraq the year before. In the last four years she has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize and has written several books. The stop in Ballard is to promote her fourth book, “Myth America: 10 Greatest Myths of the Robber Class and the Case for Revolution”. She will be speaking on July 25th at 7 p.m.

  1. Perhaps Jane Fonda could also speak! Just once it would be nice to find a church that stuck to religion and didnt stray into politics and public policy.

  2. “Just once”? TUM's Reverend Rich Lang is pretty uniquely involved in politics in this area, especially homeless advocacy:

It would be hard to find a more politically-involved pastor in this area — he's hardly typical. I'm a church-state separation activist, myself, but what Reverend Lang does doesn't seem to cross any constitutional lines.

  3. You're entitled to your opinion, and debating the war is my dad's talent, not mine. But to me what you just said lessens what she went though, like she was just an angry mama 'wrongfully' protesting the war. Many still think the Iraq war is wrong, myself among them.

  4. I have way more respect for someone who thinks a war is wrong and backs their beliefs with action than someone who is in favor of the war but too much of a coward to actually sign up in the military and fight for what they claim to believe in. Anyone who says they're for the war and isn't in the military, a veteran, or donating their time to help vets is a chicken ***t coward. PERIOD. If you think the war in Iraq is such a great idea get off your fat lazy butt and go enlist like a real man instead of those testicularly challenged windbags who drone on about how “we” have to fight the bad guys. The military is still short of recruits and there are a lot of troops who are now on their fifth or sixth deployment as a result. As someone who spent 10 years in the Army these chickenhawk, testicularly challenged cowards absolutely disgust me. They're far, FAR worse than people who protest the war. At least the protesters have some integrity and stand up for what they believe in (even if I don't agree with everything they say as is the case with Sheehan).

  5. Everyone pays taxes so that doesn't really count. It simply makes you yet another “sunshine patriot”. Like I said, if you think the war is such a great idea why don't you grow a pair, be a real man, and stand up for what you claim believe in? Don't advocate a war that you're too much of a coward to fight in. Pisses me off when people say things like “WE need to go to war with Iraq”. It's not WE, it's the soldiers who do the fighting while the rest of YOU sit at home making absolutely no sacrifice.

  6. So it's OK for others to make sacrifices but not you? Nice, you're such a model citizen. God forbid you get off your lazy butt and actually contribute to society. Heavens no, that would be asking way too much!

  7. Did you support the US military operations in Bosnia and Haiti? If so, did you volunteer? What about today's operations Obama has ordered in Afghanistan to fight the Taliban?

I opposed the Iraq war but not because I'm an pacifist; I just don't believe we should waste US treasure and blood to free people from their own cultural failures. And it seems Socialism/Communism is Cindy's new rant what with her calls for the Revolution so I guess she'll fit right in with all the gray hair hippies over at Rich 'Jim Jones' Langs Peoples Church

  8. Seriously, read this nonsense. Half baked hippie bums high on meth have a better grip on reality than this loopy, aging hippie:

The Robber Class knows that there really only exists one division in the world: Robber Class and Robbed Class. We in the Robbed Class have way more in common with each other than we do that separates us.

It’s time to break the sick relationship that we have with the Robber Class and do something about it! They can only rob us, if we allow them to.

Myth One: America: Greatest Nation in the Universe!

    Myth Two: Elections Matter

Myth Three: There's a huge Difference Between Dems and Repubs

Myth Four: It is Noble to Die in Robber Class Wars

Myth Five: The Federal Reserve Cares About You

Myth Six: It's a Privilege to pay Income Taxes to the Robber Class

Myth Seven: Housing, Health Care and Education are Privileges, too

Myth Eight: America has a Free Press

Myth Nine: The Environment, Who Needs it?

Myth Ten: 19 Muslims with box cutters were responsible for 9/11

    Summary: Conclusion: Revolution!

  9. The players on the Sounders team are not putting their lives at risk on a daily basis to so something that they believe will make our country's citizens lives better. I agree that if someone supports the war they should at least be volunteering helping veterans or something other than just talking about it and paying $1.99 for a yellow ribbon to stick on their big ole SUV's.

  10. You say you want a revolution
    Well, you know
We all want to change the world.
You tell me that it's evolution,
    Well, you know
We all want to change the world.
But when you talk about destruction,
Don't you know that you can count me out. In.
Don't you know it's going to be all right,
    all right, all right.
You say you got a real solution
    Well, you know
We'd all love to see the plan.
You ask me for a contribution,
    Well, you know
We all do what we can.
If you want money for people with minds that hate,
All I can tell you is brother you have to wait.
Don't you know it's going to be all right,
    all right, all right.
You say you'll change a constitution
    Well, you know
We'd all love to change your head.
You tell me it's the institution,
    Well, you know
You better free your mind instead.
But if you go carrying pictures of chairman Mao,
You ain't gonna make it with anyone anyhow.
Don't you know it's going to be all right,
    all right, all right.

  11. that is offensive and not true. those of us who have lost children to unjust wars and lying politicians deserve better than to be associated with ruthless dictators!

  12. I deployed as part of Uphold Democracy in 1995. I tried to volunteer for IFOR but didn't get selected (everyone wanted in on that one!) I think Iraq was a massive waste – Saddam was contained and posed no danger to the US. Action against Al Qaeda and the Taliban who sheltered them is a no-brainer as they deliberately attacked US civilians.

I think Cindy started out with a legitimate issue but has since devolved into being a career activist/rebel without a clue. That said, I still respect her far more than people who say “we” should fight wars but then refuse to serve or make any sort of real sacrifice.

  13. Yeah, when I hear people drone on about what a great workers paradise Cuba is I always ask them if that's true why do so many people risk their lives floating out of the place in a '47 Chevy? Seriously, when was the last time you heard of someone floating to Havana in a Ford Ranger to escape from the US?

  14. No, Cindy still wants her Revolution. Expect to see the usual motley crew of middle and upper middle class, college educated gray-haired hippies coming for their $500k homes to talk about the evils of private property and capitalism.

Thank God Obama has tossed the looney left overboard, useful idiots that they were for a while there.

  15. Come to cheer as Cindy Sheehan tries to methodically lie, smear, pontificate, tear down America's 200+ year reputation, denounce capitalism and promote Communist-led revolution in America.

Oh, yes – AND promote her book. And make $$$. For herself.

  16. She IS just an angry mama, who can't stand that her son had the guts and personal comnmitment to go to war and give his life for a cause that HE believed in.

If she truly loved her son, she would honor his choice, and his sacrifice, instead of belittling the cause he died for. She might as well be walking on and pooping on his grave.

The world is a better place, now that Saddam Hussein isn't in it anymore.

  17. Okay, NOW I'm REALLY morbidly curious:

If Sheehan really and truly believes that the FACT that 19 Muslims with box cutters were responsible for 9/11 is a “Myth”, then WHO, PRECISELY does she “think” DID commit the 9/11 atrocities?

The “Evil Wicked Nasty Feelthy Kapitalists” ?

    The CIA?

    The Bush Administration?

The Yale University “Skull & Bones Society” ?

Or, is she going to just cut directly to the chase, and blame the whole thing on (surprise, surprise) —

    …”The Jews” ????

  18. I'm totally down with Cindy, but the “nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize” thing is bunk. It's ridiculously easy to be nominated. Basically, any “professor of social sciences, history, philosophy, law and theology” and any judge or national legislator in any country has to nominate you, and you're “nominated for a Noble Peace Prize”.

OK, not that I've been nominated or anything, but I'm just saying…

  19. Nope, she's pretty much a windbag. That book title of hers says it all. A dried up hippie holding desperately to her marxist-leninist ideology as the rest of the world goes on by her.

  20. You're right, that one was great but old Cindy here apparently wants another one, this time based on a Marxist model (note her dislike of 'elections' which she calls a 'myth'). How many millions will need to die for her and Rev. Rich 'Jim Jones' Lang's utopia?

Crackpot Socialists. Luckily Obama tossed you-all overboard as soon as he got elected, useful idiots that you were before the election.

  21. The '9/11 was an inside job' folks are really certifiable. Most have never managed more than their own multiple personalities because if they'd ever managed an office, of say just 5 people, they'd know how impossible it would be to mount a conspiracy of this scale with thousands of people.

  22. To be more precise, and to make certain I understand.
How are any of the above mentioned 'myths' so improperly stated, as they are defined.
    Am I 'robber class'?
    'cause I feel robbed…for what it's worth.
Anyway, this is not the time, nor the reason, for her little revolution.
Vote a revolution, we shall have it.
March a revolution, you shall get blisters on yer feet.

  23. No wonder her boy chose to serve his country, he grew up in her environment, her selfishness, and he rebelled from it.
God bless him, and the many others who served.

  24. That's because it ISN'T a “right” – not an absolute right, that is. There are limits, and they are reasonable limits as well.

  25. “Associated with ruthless dictators”? What “dictator” would that be? Saddam Hussein is DEAD, dude. And he was one of the most ruthless modern-era dictators who ever lived.

    I'm glad he's dead.

And I'm proud that Sheehan's son helped MAKE him dead.

  26. Not even “thousands of sheep” could ever have managed to conceal an “inside job” on the scale of the 9/11 atrocities.

The kind of Looney-Toons who rant on mindlessly about 9/11 allegedly being an “inside job” or some “conspiracy” by some alleged ethnic or religious group (insert name of whichever religious, racial or ethnic group you wish to display your virulent prejudices against), just can't help revealing their insanity, as well as their built-in prejudices and hatreds.

No matter how “reasonable” their statements, no matter how much they try to conceal themselves behind 'civil' discourse, their poisonous hatreds and virulent prejudices will always ooze to the surface. They just can't help themselves. And I'm grateful for that. It makes them easier to expose.

  27. Very interesting how this blog originally had a more centrist posting profile, but has slowly veered to a more staunch conservative posting viewpoint. (there are a few exceptions, and they know who they are)
