Pedestrian injured in collision with car

A pedestrian was hit by a car at 8th Ave. and 49th St. this afternoon.

Police detained the driver, placing him in handcuffs. A witness at a nearby business say the driver attempted to escape after the collision, but a passerby stopped him by taking his keys away. Another witness says this incident began with an altercation between the driver and the pedestrian.

With the driver detained, the Seattle Animal Shelter arrived to take a dog which was sitting in the car. We’ve contacted SPD for more details on the incident, and we’ll post an update as soon as they provide it.

  1. Wow. Hope the cyclist is okay. Many curses on the driver who tried to hit and run, and many blessings on the witness who stopped him.
And, yeah, generalizations can be an ugly thing, Sammie. Please don't lower yourself, or this blog.

  2. I didn't see anything about a bike. I thought it was a ped?

that would be great though if we could turn this into another car v. bike thread. missing link anyone?

  3. yes, i hope the injured person is ok…

i feel bad for the poor dog, actually. he/she didn't do anything wrong now is in “jail”!

anytime i read these kind of stories, before i even think about who did what and who is at fault, i wonder,”how could anyone leave an injured person in the street – especially after 'YOU' hit them?”

really sick thing to do, hit-and-run…

so with that, i would guess the driver isat fault – why else try and escape?

**how the eff did a witness grab the keys??

  4. Sounds like, from the PI story and the extra photo captions, that the car may have been used as a weapon in a fight, rather than it having been any sort of accident.

    Great.

  5. I'll start accepting apologies for my 'wild generalizations' about the kinds of trash who need pit bulls and love hit and runs.

  6. My brother doesn't fit your mold. He had a pit bull, got him as a puppy, it died a couple of years ago after a long life as a faithful companion. My brother is a fully employed dedicated husband and father, and anyone who knows him will tell you is a very good man.
The driver here was an a-hole. The pit bull was a dog.

  7. I've had to grab keys from a couple drunks while they were in the car. Easier than it sounds actually since in both cases they were too wasted to put up much of a fight.
One guy hit my car and tried to restart his, but wound up stumbling away from the scene after I took his keys. The other guy stopped on the side of the highway to puke after nearly hitting three cars, I pulled up took his keys and called 911

  8. That was an ignorant comment. I have a pitbull and I'm about as un-thug as you can be. Lots of people other than thugs own pitbulls.

  9. That would suck. :(
But I'm not sure if it would suck any worse than someone just randomly driving up on the sidewalk on accident and hitting a pedestrian. All around it's a bad situation. I feel sorry for the dog. Pitbulls are sweet, loyal dogs that are unfortunate to be popular with jerks who shouldn't have any pets.

  10. Yeah, and those thugs are the reason people are afraid to adopt a shelter dog with any pit bull in them. Even if this a-hole doesn't get his dog back this dog is in for a rough time.

  11. Well, if it's not bike vs. car it's got to be pitbulls. Or homeless people. Or homeless pitbulls on bicycles. Hmmm … makes me wish I had a more original cause to devolve all my arguments into. Like hamsters or something.

  12. Probably not too hard as I've heard of that happening in a lot of situations. When I was hit by a drunk driver many years ago she tried to run away and some bystanders tackled her and held her down until the police arrived. I think when you see something awful like that happen, adrenaline kicks in and folks can move really fast when motivated.

  13. I saw the PI article and at first I thought maybe that the fight the article mentioned breaking out was AFTER the pedestrian was hit. But by the looks of the photos that are posted here it doesn't look like he was in good enough shape to try to engage in a fight after getting hit. So, yeah, it does sound like the car was used as a weapon in the fight. That really sucks.

  14. Are you trying to start something with me, Eric? LOL

Funny that I have described my gluten-free friend as “yummy”. I guess he only *looks* yummy.

  15. Watch out for people who have hamsters. They are always really cranky because the hamsters keep them up all night running on their wheels.

  16. Sorry, NoraBell, I feel you, I really do. But it's kinda true, and that's coming from someone who lived with a sweet, sweet Rott for a while, and couldn't understand why she was so misunderstood.

But Ballard's favorite gas station shooter has a Rott and a Pit Bull…

  17. Oh, and I only hate blanket statements about pit bulls because it effects what people are thinking when they look for a dog to adopt. There was one recently on the Magnolia blog who was only part pit bull up for adoption and it got a little of that prejudice in the comments.

  18. I'm in total agreement with you there. The dogs are not at fault, and it's sad how many are taken away (and for good reason), and will never find homes.

  19. That's no good. Hitting someone with a car on purpose can be classified as “Assault with a deadly weapon.” It can be as bad as if you shot someone. For those that like to speed, you can get the same thing if you get a ticket over 85 MPH.

  20. Wouldn't you only get “assault with a deadly weapon” charge for speeding over 85mph if you actually hit someone? It seems unlikely that a person would be charged with felony assault for going over 85 mph for a speeding ticket. What about on the state hwy's where the speed limit is 70 mph? I have people pass me (while I'm going 75mph) much much faster on a regular basis – so they are easily going 85mph or more). So all those people could be charged with felony assault?

  21. NoraBell, I received an email from Disqus regarding this thread:

That may be where you got the “cyclist” part!
