There’s a new start-up in town that aims at connecting volunteers with nonprofits and nonprofits with volunteers. It’s called Flash Volunteer. The organization is working to build community through neighborhood-focused volunteerism, states their Twitter page. Right now the Flash Volunteer Ballard page has just a handful of volunteers signed up with just one volunteer opportunity. Given that we’ve received quite a few emails looking for volunteer opportunities, we’re thinking that this site might become pretty popular.

is this better than the united way website?
It's different. In addition to the traditional nonprofit to volunteer connection, Flash Volunteer also allows users to create their own events and share them with their friends. Since everything is organized by neighborhood, the system also encourages community building via social networking tools, so users can create Flash Teams with their neighbors and fellow volunteers. We'll also be releasing an iPhone app later this month that provides a real-time snapshot of volunteer opportunities based on the user's GPS location, which will allow for drop-in volunteerism and last-minute attendance at local events. It really depends what you're looking for, but I would encourage you to create an account and take it for a spin.

I love this idea, but i don't particularly want it linked to any of my accounts. Why is that necessary?
Thanks, Jesse! I hope you enjoy using it. And to answer your question, the log-in is set-up so that a volunteer doesn't have to create a separate username and password; they can just use a pre-existing Google, Yahoo or Facebook account. It's more secure and also helps combat “account fatigue”…
Hmm Maybe – usually e-vite to my events and allow for random word of mouth in the non- virtual world. That is where I find the magic. How will this contribute to my sense of play?
Every year, my company, Sparling, allows each of its employees to schedule a Community Service “Day-On” where we take a day off from work and volunteer our time in the community. If there are any week days coming up that anyone knows of a spot I could volunteer at for a few hours and help out with ANYTHING—it would be greatly appreciated.
Since this is just a one day opportunity and I live in Ballard I thought I would give it a shot here..
