Ross Playground renovation meeting Tuesday

It’s out with the old and in with the new at the Ross Playground (4320 4th Ave NW). In about a year, the park will have new play equipment, site improvements and access imrpovements.

Seattle Parks and Recreation along with designers from Worthy and Associates will introduce the $450,000 renovation project and get ideas from the community at the first of three meetings on Tuesday evening. The design process will last through this summer with construction over next winter. The renovated park should be open in summer of 2011.

The meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 20th from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Ross Shelter House (4320 4th Ave NW.) This renovation project is funded by the 2008 Parks and Green Spaces Levy. More information can be found here.

  1. Is there a reason they are replacing it? Is is dangerous like Salmon Bay School's playground?

I just hope were not wasting tax money on something like this when its perfectly ok. Can they donate this structure to Salmon Bay if it IS ok so at least the waste in tax money is somewhat justified?

  2. Waste Not — Great idea on passing this equipment along to Salmon Bay! Do you know someone who goes there? You should pass the idea along.

I would like to know if Pacific Crest School is participating in any way (in either planning or funding)? They use this park as their playground with their students. It would be nice to know what they do to give back to this park.

    Thanks.

  3. What a great project!

This is a great beach park but the playground is terrible in every way. The picture doesn't do it justice of how bad it is!!! Old equipment, not well kept and really small for a park that gets a lot of kids playing there in the spring and summer. Also the worst part is it's right on the street and not the safest place to have playground equipment. I guess that's why they are moving it…makes a lot of since to me.

Also, several years back they overhauled the building/rec center there and this will be another nice addition to one of the greatest beaches in Seattle.

I applaud this move and can't wait to see what the design will look like!

Thanks for posting this story GS.

  4. Are you calling it a beach park because it has sand in it? Well, it's more of a sandbox park in that case, because it is no where near the water. It is on NW44th and 3rd Ave NW. Think-up the the hill-from Hales on Leary.

I do agree it is ready for an update. I don't know how much they could actually “move” any equipment though. The playground is smack up against a ball field where they play t-ball, which is up above a ball field where little league is played.

I do wonder how they will spend the nearly half a million dollars. I hope they add more access, more picnic tables and do some more landscaping in addition to updating the equipment

  5. Mary – you are correct. I guess I was thinking about the other post about the Golden Gardens park and when I saw the picture in this post I assumed it was the same park but it isn't. They are getting ready to update the park at GG soon. Guess I needed another cup of coffee yesterday!
