A one-car accident this morning closed 32nd Ave NW for a short time this morning just north of NW 80th.
According to neighbors, the driver of this Honda told them that she was grabbing a tissue when her car hit a rock near the road. The car rolled and struck a tree, trapping the driver. According to police on the scene the woman was talking, telling them that she was fine. She was taken by AMR to the hospital. (Thank you Silver for the tip!)

how big of a rock does a car need to hit to actually flip over (assuming it was traveling at 30 mph)?
sounds like a problem my high school physics teacher would’ve assigned.
it would seem to take a rather large rock. I wonder if it was deliberately placed in the roadway or perhaps fell off a truck.
Many residents along this stretch put big rocks along side the the curb to prevent cars from parking up on the parking strip. I’m guessing that’s what she hit.
I think she has got rocks in her head.
You’re right, blite. The ones I’m thinking of are a hideous shade of hot pink.
Glad nobody was seriously injured.
is this legal? (putting big rocks along side the road, regardless of color).
the parking strip after all belongs to the city, not the homeower.
I find this stretch particularly difficult to drive on. for a ‘collector’ street, it is fairly narrow and there are often cars parked on both sides of the street. you shouldn’t have to slow/stop and wait for oncoming traffic to move by you on this type of street.
a few years ago, there was a big house being constructed on the west side of 32nd a bit north of there. I avoided 32nd for about 2 years because all the construction vehicles for that one house made it very trying to drive by.
anyway, if I hit a rock that someone stuck by the curb, I’d sure seek legal action against the homeowner.
That’s a boulder stance than I would take.
Sounds like it’s time to ban the use of tissue while driving.
Yep – what a ridiculous statement:
“anyway, if I hit a rock that someone stuck by the curb, I’d sure seek legal action against the homeowner.”
Are you kidding me? You would sue because you drove off the road? Did you get that–YOU DROVE OFF THE ROAD! What if there was a bystander there and they were seriously hurt or killed? Now who would be getting sued?
Another thought for you to ponder – Would you also sue the city if you had hit one of the trees that are on the public right of way?
My guess is probably. Good luck with that.
should someone really expect a large rock to be at the edge of an (already) narrow roadway? I don’t think so pal.
hitting a tree 5 feet away from the curb is pretty different than a large rock. probably wouldn’t make YOUR CAR ROLL. it’s like putting a ramp on the side of the road. got it?
my guess is probably not. your comparisons make little sense.
luckily I’m a skilled driver who used to regularly pull this stunt (hitting a bump at high speed) to get my car up on the right two wheels. you wouldn’t believe how many chicks this got me. in a chevy monza nonetheless.!
The rocks in question are definitely not in the roadway but up on the grass strip above the curb where shrubs and trees are often planted on others’ properties. Hitting these rocks does mean the driver has driven off the road.

only in America would you even think about suing someone for hitting a rock on their property that is OFF THE ROAD.
yep is an idiot
Scary thing is she will almost certainly be allowed to keep her license even though she’s clearly proven she can’t safely drive. Regardless of the situation this was her fault. She should either be able to grab a tissue without losing control of her car or should have enough control of her car to avoid hitting objects large enough to cause it to roll. Either way this person clearly doesn’t know how to drive. Of course driving is taken to be a right in this country so fat chance she’ll be given anything more than a minor fine.
I bet it wasn’t a tissue but that she was texting or talking on her phone. And when she saw that she was headed towards the parking strip she turned to quick and flipped her car. Use your brains here people, put your phones down and drive. Your neighbors live here.
She hit the tree too.
I’ll bet that she was exceeding the speed limit to get the momentum to roll the car. I rarely see any cars on that road driving at a the posted limit. People need to slow down and watch for rocks, children, cyclist, dogs, coyotes and other small animals. FOR FOX SHAKE, SLOW DOWN!
it’s not on ‘their’ property, bonehead.
it’s in the city’s right of way.
why can’t you get that through you’re very, very thick skull?
