Play a little Petanque to celebrate Bastille Day

Bastille Café & Bar (5307 Ballard Ave NW) is hosting their second annual Bastille Day Celebration today with food and drink specials and a Petanque Tournament.

Petanque, which originated in southern France in 1907, is similar to bocce.

From the Petanque-America website:

Petanque is extremely simple, just like horseshoes. There’s a target, and you have to get as close to it as possible.
What makes it so appealing, is that you can be way ahead for a while, yet lose a second later, or vice versa. Because nothing is decided until the last player plays the very last boule. If he or she moves the aim ball or kicks an opponent ball out of the way, the layout of the boules – and thus your score – may change dramatically.

The tournament starts at 1 p.m. in the grassy park area across the street from Bastille on Ballard Avenue. Registration for teams of three begins at 12 p.m. The fee is $10 per team which includes a t-shirt. Light snacks and drinks will be available for purchase. Restaurant industry people can have the entry fee waved by providing a cocktail recipe. Email Rocky Yeh at rocky@cooper-and-sons.com for details.

Bastille will open at 4:30 with a beer garden on the patio with food and drink specials. Dinner service starts at 5:30 p.m. and reservations are recommended.
