Today, the 63-year-old boathouse on the north side of the Ballard Locks was demolished. The boathouse, which was built in 1949, had structural damage and was falling down. The building was in the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks Historic District, but had been classified as a danger to public safety because of significant damage to the ceiling. This morning, a barge was pulled up to the boathouse, where grapples were chewing away at the crumbling walls, forming a huge pile of debris.
Crews expect the demolition will be done by the end of the day. No word yet on what the space will be used for in the future.
