A week from today (Tuesday, August 21), the Puget Sound Blood Center will be in Ballard for a blood drive. The blood center’s mobile unit will be in front of JoAnn Fabrics (2217 NW 57th Street) from 1 to 7 p.m. Sign-ups are available online or over the phone at 1-800-398-7888.
From the Puget Sound Blood Center:
Your single donation can help up to three recipients, including premature infants, people being treated for cancer lor leukemia, blood diseases, surgery patients and victims of traumatic injury. In Western Washington, a person needs a transfusion every two minutes.
If you haven’t donated blood before, please consider it! Summertime is a perfect time to donate as need is highest. It doesn’t take that long — about an hour total (from check-in to hanging out in the ‘canteen’ following your donation. Actual blood donation time takes between 10-12 minutes (and can even go faster!).
The blood center says donors should eat a balanced breakfast that morning, and drink water before and during donation. After the donation, they have a canteen serving water, juice, coffee and cookies for donors.
