The Ballard Bee Company‘s farm has been robbed. The culprit? Some hungry bears, apparently. According to owner Corky Luster, the bears made off with up to $1,000 worth of honey. The hives were at Local Roots farm in Snoqualmie, and Luster said one of his interns noticed that some of the hives were destroyed. Some nearby bear scat and scratches on the hives clued them in that bears were clearly the perpetrators. Luster says there’s not an electric fence around the farm, and was surprised that the bears came down that far from the woods.
Damage to the hives, lost bees and honey amounts up to a sizable loss for the Ballard Bee Company. “I don’t blame the bears at all,” Luster said. “That’s what they do – they’re smart. We just have to be smarter,” he admitted.
