On Friday, Mayor McGinn joined with U.S. Rep. Jim McDermott and City Councilmember Nick Licata to launch Seattle Human Services Department’s Summer Food Service Program. The program will provide free nutritious meals to thousands of kids at 100 community locations across Seattle over the summer.
Kids from 1 – 18 years of age will be eligible for the program and will receive free breakfasts and lunches starting today through August 23. The program is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and was formerly known as “Summer Sack Lunch”.
“We want young people in Seattle to have a fun, safe and healthy summer,” said Mayor McGinn, “And it all starts with good nutrition. We want more people to know about this great free program for kids and teens.”
According to the program’s website, meals will be served to children and teens at approved sites where at least half the participants are eligible for free or reduced price school lunches.
The approved sites that will provide the meals include designated community centers, Seattle park playgrounds, Boys and Girls Clubs, YMCAs and YWCAs, and other community sites throughout Seattle and parts of King County. The closest location to Ballard is Viewlands Elementary (10525 3rd Ave NW) which is open Monday -Friday for lunch from 12 p.m. – 1 p.m. until August 30.
