King County Metro buses will be operating on a holiday and reduced weekday schedule over the Christmas period and during several holiday periods in January. A full week of reduced service is set to start today and continue until January 1.
According to Metro, using a limited schedule over the holiday periods from November until January saves them approximately $1 million a year. The reduced service periods coincide with holidays where Metro has historically seen reduced ridership of up to fifteen percent.
Sunday schedules will be in effect on both Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Reduced weekday schedules will be in place on:
- Christmas Eve, December 24
- Thursday, Friday and Monday, December 26-31 (weekdays only)
- Monday, Jan. 20 – Martin Luther King Jr. Day
When the reduced weekday schedules are in place, some commuter and school-oriented routes do not operate, and other routes have individual trips canceled. Metro will also makes some adjustments to routes that serve the University of Washington. When the UW is not in session, there will also be some bus trip reductions.
Some of the alterations will impact routes that service Ballard. During the “reduced weekday schedule” the 15EX and Route 62 will be canceled. Route 41 will also operate with fewer trips.
