The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks large chamber will close to marine traffic starting tomorrow, 9:00 am Tuesday, November 10 through 5 :00 pm Wednesday, December 2.
The large chamber closure and pump out will be conducted by crews for safety and maintenance. Pedestrians may occasionally be diverted or delayed for crane operations, but will always be able to cross. The small lock will continue 24-hour operations, accommodating vessels less than 115 feet in length and 26 feet in width. Current information is available here. Mariners may experience delays, depending on passage demand.
This annual closure gives dam safety experts and maintenance staff a chance to dry the chambers for complete inspection, as well as an opportunity to make necessary repairs. While it is typically only schedule for two weeks, an additional week is required this year for de-watering and added maintenance. De-watering operations may take additional time while the original, 100-year old pump plant is being replaced.
As the Chittenden Locks approach their 100-year anniversary in 2017, this routine maintenance is necessary to keep the Locks safe and operational.
