Kickin’ Boot space gets a new look as new restaurant prepares to open

We reported earlier this month that Lark chef Mitch Mayers is planning to open a new restaurant in the old Kickin’ Boot location on 22nd Ave. NW and Shilshole.

A My Ballard reader sent us this photo of the Kickin’ Boot sign — complete with the boot — being removed this morning. The new restaurant’s name has yet to be released.

A few days ago, Seattle Met gathered a few more details on the new spot. Mayers is planning dishes like oxtail nachos, savory parmesan churros and a Reuben tartine. He’s moving the bar and adding 115 seats in all — a very large restaurant by Ballard standards.

Mayers is aiming for a July launch.

  1. I hope a place opens up I can afford. I hope I won’t have to step over needles to get there. I hope it doesn’t rain tomorrow. I hope. I hope. I hope…………………..

  2. Kicking Boot was a good value. Hard to get excited about a $20 cocktail and overpriced, overwrought bar food.
Let’s hope Mayers hires some hot people to work here and not the sourpuss blue hair brigade. There’s no point to bringing “Caitlinn/Rebekah” to a $100 first date without the possibility of at least flirting with the staff if Princess decides to friend zone you.

  3. Kickin Boot was an awful dining experience. Somehow, it lasted a shockingly long time. Not sure how, since both the food and the service were sorely lacking. Hope the new restaurant is much better!

  4. I always enjoyed Kickin’ Boot, even though towards the end the menu options dwindled as did the waitstaff. It was one of our go-to places when we couldn’t think of anything but a ton of good food.

Well now we can get excited for “tartines” and “savory churros” and I’m sure a $40 pork belly option served by an unfire-able #MeToo’er.

Pro Tip: don’t “mansplain” your menu or cocktail selection by using a normal tone of voice. We need a Hooters in Ballard like yesterday.

  6. Beautiful space, surprised theyā€™re sinking money into it to remodel. Wish them well, Ballard restaurant business is tough right now and Iā€™m sure this spot ainā€™t cheap.

  7. @John – Hubris, perhaps? Large rooms are dangerous — they look empty even when you might have a decent number of diners and, short of lousy food/service, nothing makes people more uncomfortable in a restaurant than feeling like they are eating where no one else wants to be.
