Update: Rachel in comments says she was the one who was hit. “I am the cyclist – still at Harborview with a broken nose and teeth and a lot of stitches but should be able to leave soon and am glad it was not worse,” she said. “I hope they find the driver too!”
Earlier: Medics responded to a possible hit and run at Market St. and 14th Ave. NW just after 9 p.m. A woman riding her bike was hit by a driver of a Ford Explorer, according to scanner reports.
The extent of her injuries is unknown. She was taken to the hospital.
Officers said they’re looking for a Ford Explorer with front-end damage. We’re checking with SPD for more information.
(Thank you Silver for the info in the My Ballard Facebook Group. Traffic camera photo from the Seattle Department of Transportation)
we need to be cautious while driving.
I hope the cyclist is o.k. and that the police find that driver is found.

Rachel, can you tell us what happened?
Rachel – Oh I sure hope you recover quickly – so sorry this happened to you.
Thanks Lynsey! Skip, the exact details are still a bit fuzzy (found this article while looking to see if there was video or witnesses who could confirm) but I have a recollection of crossing 14th on market (towards 15th) and suddenly seeing a car speeding into me (maybe making a right from 14th onto market?) and there was no time to react.
I am so sorry this happened to you Rachel – I hope you recover quickly.
So sorry this happened to you. Drivers do need to be more careful. I hope you recover quickly.
I rode past as you were being treated by EMTs, Rachel – the scene looked dreadful. I’m so glad you’re alive!
Wow Shawn. Thanks for being so concerned you just kept truckin’. Hope you ride by and post when I’m in crisis.
Hi Rachel…I’m so sorry about this. I’m thankful it wasn’t worse, but sounds like it was bad enough!
Rachel
I was one of the people who stopped to help you. I’m so happy you are recovering!! I pulled over with the pedestrians who had stopped to help. We stayed with you until they cleared the scene. We gathered blankets to keep you warm. A nice woman sat with you and another Samaritan blocked that lane with his car to keep the scene clear, and i moved cars along. Hoping your recovery goes well. I’m sorry i didn’t see it happen. I hope the police catch the person who fled the scene.
Do you recall what color the Explorer was? Reason I ask is that I spotted a similar looking model SUV, dark green, parked on 9th NW between 49th & 50th facing northbound on the east side of the street. It looked a bit beat up all around, and had recently been ticketed. I periodically see it in the area, tucked in with RVs, and I think given what I could see as I drove by this morning, that the occupant may live in it.
Kim, thank you so much for helping me! I really appreciate it – nice to know that even though the person that hit me drove away there were other good Samaritans who jumped in to help!
Thomas, I called the police to check in this afternoon and they said their records showed it was a white or silver Ford Explorer. In my memory of seeing the car before it hit me it was white but my memory of that is so fuzzy I don’t really trust it.
