A few quick news briefs from Ballard and beyond…
PARKLET: A new parklet is coming to Ballard (above), right in front of Ethan Stowell’s Bramling Cross on Ballard Ave. (You’re probably already familiar with the boat parklet next to Mighty-O-Donuts.) Businesses can apply to build a parklet in a single parking spot if a variety of conditions are met (.pdf) — and they have $15,000 to $50,000 to build one. (Photo by Dongho Chang)
99 TUNNEL: The roadways are now installed in the Highway 99 tunnel, and crews are working next on safety systems: ventilation, fire suppression and 300 traffic cameras. This animated video is a good overview. WSDOT is keeping with its estimate that the tunnel may open as early as this fall.
BEER HALL: Skål Beer Hall is raising money for finishing touches before it opens later this spring, and it’s offering membership benefits to attract your donations. Among them: get added to the wall of honor with a Viking name as a founding member.
EDITOR CONSIGNMENT: A new women’s consignment clothing boutique called Editor Consignment is opening this Saturday at 6706 15th Ave NW. “Editor brings together contemporary recycled fashion and a rotating selection of essays and prose,” explains founder Emily Schikora. “(It’s) a place to browse a curated collection of women’s fashion, consign your clothing, ask for book recommendations, or talk about writing.” More details here.
MAYOR IN BALLARD: Mayor Jenny Durkan will hold community discussion at the Ballard Community Center this Saturday from 2:30 to 4 p.m. And there’s lots to talk about: upzoning, crime, homelessness and light rail are sure to be hot-button issues.
STOLEN BIKE STING: When a man found his stolen bike for sale online, he set up a meeting with the seller in front of Marketime Foods on Fremont Ave. — and called Seattle Police. When they arrived, they “found a man pushing the orange bike around a parking lot as he nervously eyed officers,” SPD explains. “The man eventually stood the bike up against a wall and walked away.” He didn’t get far: officers arrested him for possession of stolen property.
SALMON BAY PARK: The first meeting of the Salmon Bay Park Stewards was a success, says organizer Sylvia Saracino. They’ve scheduled a second meeting for April 19th — with a Seattle PD crime prevention officer — to learn how to set up effective block watches. More details here.
NW PEAKS: The NW Peaks tap room in Ballard is getting an upgrade. The bar will be closed from April 2-4 for construction, and when it reopens on April 5th, it will feature a newly-refurbished patio and porch and a face-lift throughout. Here are details about the grand re-opening.

Pretty sure that parklet is hostile architecture. A tent or RV could be set up there. I see what you’re doing, Ethan Stowell.
