Musashi Newsroom replaces Equal Exchange on 15th and Market

Musashi Newsroom has taken over the Equal Exchange Espresso location on the northeast corner of 15th and Market.

The cafe is one part coffee, one part sushi, open now in the commercial development that’s also home to Chase Bank, Target, WeWork, and Polyclinic.

Equal Exchange Espresso owner Alison Booth Gribas told My Ballard that they decided not to reopen the 15th/Market location after the pandemic closures due to the uncertainty in retail and foodservice. Equal Exchange still owns and operates their Shoreline location in Central Market, and Gribas says they will be providing Equal Exchange beans for the newly opened Musashi Newsroom cafe.

Newsroom owner Phillip Yin says he was eager to jump on the opportunity to take over the cafe space and has partnered with Musashi owner Jun Park in the new venture. Yin owns and operates another Newsroom Cafe in Mill Creek and one in Yakima; this will be his third cafe.

“I’m taking a gamble opening during this crazy time,” Yin told My Ballard. “But so far, the feedback has been good.” He says they’re promoting their grab-and-go options right now, but are offering dining-in at a reduced capacity.

Musashi will feature 10 specialty fresh sushi rolls for their Ballard location (menu above), alongside Equal Exchange espresso and Blazing Bagels. Yin told My Ballard they’re open 9am to 7:30pm.
