This Sunday, volunteers will be out cleaning up Golden Gardens Beach.
The event is being organized by the local chapter of Sea Shepherd. The group will be at the beach on Sunday, April 25 from 10:15am to 1pm. “Help us keep ocean plastics and other pollutants out of the Puget Sound and out of the stomachs of marine life!” the organizers say.
Sea Shepherd asks that volunteers bring a mask, sturdy shoes, gloves, and litter pickers if you have them. All cleanup volunteers will also get 25% off merchandise from Sea Shepherd.
Sea Shepherd is an international nonprofit dedicated to marine environmental justice. The organization aims to partner with governments from around the world to detect and put an end to criminal fishing operations.
The nonprofit hosts volunteer events worldwide, and the Seattle chapter is fairly active with local advocacy efforts and cleaning events in Seattle parks and beaches. Sea Shepherd also hosted a cleanup at Golden Gardens last year; a group of 13 volunteers collected over 100 lbs. of trash in their one-day clean in July 2020.
