The Ballard Avenue Landmark District Board election is coming up, and this year, it’s all happening by mail.
Every year, the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods (DON) Historic Preservation Program hosts an election to facilitate the selection of Ballard Avenue Landmark District Board members who have been nominated by the community.
Ballard Avenue Landmark District is a nationally recognized historic district established that was established in 1976 to “commemorate the neighborhood’s unique place in Ballard’s history.” The board is responsible for reviewing and approving all changes to building exteriors within the district before changes are made. That includes any signs, awnings, window transparency, paint colors, street furniture, and new construction.
According to the DON, all residents,business operators, and property owners in the Ballard Avenue Landmark District who have registered to vote at least 14 days prior to the District election are eligible to vote. The deadline to register to vote is Tuesday, November 16.

There will also be several upcoming in-person voter registration opportunities where eligible voters can register at the Ballard Customer Service Center conference room (5604 22nd Ave NW).
- Friday October 15, 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm
- Thursday October 21, 9:00 am – 11:00 am
- Friday October 29, 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm
- Tuesday November 9, 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm
- Tuesday November 16, 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Once you register, the DON will send ballots and self-addressed, stamped enveloped on Nov. 17. Completed ballots must be received via USPS Mail by Tuesday, Nov. 30 to be counted.
There will be four candidates listed on the 2021 ballot:
- Position #2 for Property Owner (term expires 6/30/23)
- Position #4 for Property Owner or Business Person (term expires 6/30/23)
- Position #6 for Property Owner or Business Person (term expires 6/30/22)
- Position #7 for Property Owner (term expires 6/30/22)
In the meantime, community members are invited to nominate candidates for the open positions. Nomination forms must be completed and returned to the Seattle DON by 5 p.m. on Nov. 2.
