The local heron population is about to expand with 70 nests set high in the trees above Commodore Park at the Ballard Locks.
The Heron Habitat Helpers tell My Ballard that this nesting season, the herons have been building nests in trees they haven’t used in the past. They’ve also moved away from some of their past nesting sites, such as in the Ballard Locks botanical garden.
Chicks usually hatch in late April and early May, and Heron Habitat Helpers will be hosting an event with telescopes before they hatch so the public can get a closer look at the nests.
