Theo Chocolate closing Fremont factory, merging with national candy company

The Theo Chocolate factory in Fremont is closing as it merges with a national candy company.

American Licorice Company (ALC) is acquiring Theo, a Seattle-founded organic chocolate company that started 18 years ago.

According to a statement from Theo, about 60 Theo employees will be laid off in the second half of 2023. While the factory is closing, Theo will retain its flagship adjoining store and Seattle headquarters.

“Like other businesses, we are contending with rising costs across all aspects of our manufacturing and supply chain, requiring us to change,” Theo CEO Etienne Patout said in the statement. “We’ve had to make some tough but necessary decisions to ensure the company’s long-term viability.”

Theo is joining ALC’s “organic and better-for-you” brands which also include Torie & Howard candies and Zing Bars.

The last day for a Theo Chocolate factory tour is August 30.
