The celebration to mark the opening of Ballard Common’s new playground is tomorrow (Saturday), April 20.
The nautical-themed playground, years in the making, is aptly called “The Cove”. Ballard Alliance and Seattle Parks and Recreation are hosting the ribbon cutting, happening from 11 a.m to 3 p.m. tomorrow.
The event will begin with a youth performance from School of Rock’s Bellevue House Band followed by the official ribbon cutting at noon. After the ribbon cutting, there will be more performances from School of Rock’s Seattle House Band, Little Stars Improv Comedy, Storytime with Fabi from Ballard Public Library, and music from the Ingraham High School Jazz Combo.
“Not only does this new place offer an amazing opportunity for youth and families in our Ballard urban core, it’s a welcome addition that will help complete the transformation of Ballard Commons Park,” Ballard Alliance Executive Director Mike Stewart said.
Councilmember Dan Strauss has coordinated with the Ballard Alliance and Seattle Parks for years on the project.
“Cutting the ribbon and opening the long-awaited children’s playground at the Ballard Commons Park marks the next step in a multi-year plan improving the park so that Seattleites of all ages and abilities have a place in the park,” Strauss said.
“The Ballard Alliance and community members have championed the addition of this children’s playground for years and partnered with me to secure funding for the project. We couldn’t have done this without our community champions, the Ballard Alliance, and Mayor Harrell’s continued support of our efforts.”
