Three nearby grocery stores included in potential sale in Kroger-Albertsons merger

Three Ballard and Crown Hill grocery stores are included in a list of stores that may be sold* in the recently announced Kroger-Albertsons merger: The QFCs at 5700 24th Ave NW and 9999 Holman Rd NW and the Safeway at 8340 15th Ave NW.

Kroger owns QFC and Fred Meyer, while Albertsons owns Safeway and Haggen. In the merger, announced on Tuesday, the companies are planning to sell 124 Washington locations as part of the $25 billion merger. The buyer would be New Hampshire-based C&S Wholesale Grocers, which owns the Piggly Wiggly and Grand Union brands.

In total Kroger and Albertsons would sell 579 stores across the country.

Kroger CEO Rodney McMullen said he expects C&S will keep the stores open.

The local chapter of the United Food & Commercial Workers (UFCW) said the merger isn’t a done deal. Tom Geiger from the Seattle-based UFCW 3000 said in a statement that they’re working to stop the “mega-merger” because they see it harming workers, shoppers, and suppliers.
