SDOT announces schedule for full Ballard Bridge closures this fall

The Ballard Bridge will close to traffic over five weekends this fall as part of a maintenance project on the 107-year-old bridge.

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) says the closures will begin as early as 7 p.m. on Friday, with the bridge fully closing at 10 p.m. They say it will open by 5 a.m. the following Monday.

Here are the weekends scheduled for closures:

  • Friday, September 13, 2024, through Monday morning, September 16, 2024
  • Friday, September 27, 2024, through Monday morning, September 30, 2024
  • Friday, October 4, 2024, through Monday morning, October 7, 2024
  • Friday, October 11, 2024, through Monday morning, October 14, 2024
  • Friday, October 18, 2024, through Monday morning, October 21, 2024

SDOT says the bridge will still be open to people walking and biking across during the closures.

Bus stops may be temporarily relocated during the closures, and SDOT says they recommend using the Aurora Bridge “for the most reliable travel” during the closures.

The closure is necessary, SDOT says, so they can work on 16 different bridge expansion joints, which are elements of the bridge that help support movement on the bridge and temperature changes. If the expansion joints swell in high heat, SDOT has to cool them down by spraying the bridge. Expansion joints are also meant to prevent damage from earthquakes.
