Temporary lane restrictions and sidewalk repairs continue for Route 40 upgrades

The project to improve the Route 40 corridor is ongoing in North Seattle, with sidewalk improvements and temporary lane restrictions continuing in downtown Ballard.

As part of the project, the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) is making improvements along most of the Route 40 corridor, which includes upgraded curb ramps, new bus bulbs, 6,000 feet of upgraded sidewalks, and several. new or upgraded crosswalks.

Route 40 corridor

SDOT crews are currently working in Ballard on NW Market St between Ballard Ave NW and 22nd Ave NW.

Here’s a summary of current work (from SDOT):

  • Concrete pouring in select areas for the sidewalk improvements. Portions of the sidewalk will begin to re-open.
  • Sidewalk improvements on 22nd Ave NW and NW Market St (next to Sam’s Sushi and Starbucks) and Leary Way Ave NW and NW Market St (next to Bergen Place Park and Thai Thani Kitchen) is continuing.
  • Temporary lane reductions and parking restrictions around this area for much of September and into October during non-peak hours (9 a.m. -3 p.m.), on weekdays and weekends.
  • Detour signage in place.

And on Leary Ave NW between 20th Ave NW and NW Market St:

  • Crews are beginning to pour new concrete for the improved sidewalk.
  • Construction for the new large concrete sidewalk extensions next to and across the street from Olympic Athletic Club is continuing. SDOT hopes to start pouring in concrete for the improved sidewalks soon. Vehicles can expect partial street closures on 20th Ave NW, between Leary Ave NW and Ballard Ave NW.

Finally, between NW Dock Pl and NW Ione Pl:

  • Crews will continue their work on sidewalk, curb ramps, and bus zone improvements. Expect new paving and larger bus bulbs in both directions of Leary Ave NW. This will require sidewalk demolition, electrical trenching, and curb work that could last into Fall. Pedestrians will be directed to use detours down to Ballard Ave NW.
  • Temporary lane reductions, parking restrictions, sidewalk detours, and temporary driveway impacts in select areas of Leary Ave NW throughout the Summer and Fall. Construction is typically weekdays and select weekends from 7 a.m. – 4 p.m.
