A new restaurant called Kahlo & Loyal is opening soon at 5608 17th Ave NW.
Kahlo & Loyal chef and owner Sheldon Raju grew up in Durban, South Africa. He says the time he spent with his grandfather at a community temple that ignited his passion for cooking. “…weekends at the temple were always abuzz with a Hindu wedding or cultural occasion, and it was this bustling energy, along with the captivating aromas that streamed from the temple kitchens that captured his heart and developed his great passion for cooking and the art of service,” Raju’s website reads.
Raju attended culinary school in Durban, and worked his way through restaurants working as a waiter and cook before relocating to Cape Town. He landed at a restaurant called Jardine, where he spent two years before moving to Amsterdam and later Germany to work in restaurants and hotels.
Raju returned to South Africa and spent several more years in various restaurants and at safari lodges before relocating to the Pacific Northwest, settling in Seattle.
Raju launched Kahlo & Loyal as a pop-up and catering service, but he’s now set his sights on a brick-and-mortar.
Kahlo & Loyal will serve a daily changing tapas menu inspired by street food from around the world. “Our menu features a delightful selection that caters to a variety of tastes and appetites, making it perfect for everyone—from individuals looking for a quick bite to families seeking a shared dining experience,” the website reads.
Kahlo & Loyal is opening in the space where Little Prague Bakery operated before it closed in October 2024.
No word yet on when Kahlo & Loyal will open, but we’ll keep you posted.
