Mediterranean and Middle-Eastern inspired restaurant Sabine expands to offer dinner service

The Ballard Ave Mediterranean restaurant Sabine Cafe has expanded its offerings to include dinner service.

Sabine has been a Ballard Avenue staple since it opened in 2020, serving primarily brunch and offering a cozy spot to settle for coffee dates, boozy brunches, remote working or grabbing a coffee and pastry to-go.

In an evolution that began last year, Sabine has expanded its hours, opening its space for dinner service from Tuesday through Saturday.

Sabine’s intimate back bar has been repurposed as a private event space, while the main café area—inclusive of Sabine’s popular terrace—has adapted into a dinnertime dining venue.

At the helm of Sabine’s cuisine is Head Chef Jacob Dunkelberger, whose background includes stints at Seattle foodie favorites Spinasse and Portage Bay. When asked about his vision, he shared, “My approach to our menu is inspired by the flavors and traditions of the eastern and northern Mediterranean, combined with the incredible bounty of Washington state’s farms, ranches, fisheries, and foraged ingredients,” Dunkelberger said.

He continued: “I also draw inspiration from the restaurants I’ve visited around the world, the rich histories of different cultures, and the foods that bring people together around a table or fire. But beyond that, I infuse my own creative touch and experience, making each dish uniquely Sabine.

“One of my biggest goals is to keep our kitchen focused on whole foods—steering clear of processed or pre-prepared ingredients. This commitment not only enhances the flavors of the food but also ensures that what we serve supports a balanced, nourishing, and satisfying dining experience.”

Sabine continues to offer a full drink selection that includes inventive cocktails, a well-curated wine list, and an array of non-alcoholic options to suit all preferences, with happy hour discounts from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Seasonal desserts include their in-house soft-serve with rotating monthly flavors (soft-serve lovers should also know that it’s an all-day affair—soft-serve affogatos are now part of Sabine’s daytime menu, too).

Sabine is also now offering special ticketed events like a sold-out Valentine’s Day three course dinner and an upcoming gin-infused ‘spirit dinner’, and monthly “give back bake sale” fundraisers for different charities on the third Thursday of the month. “At the heart of Sabine is human connection,” says GM and owner Kathryn Meyer.

“Our role in the community is to be just that, a place for people to connect. Providing a beautiful space for people to enjoy the company of others while being taken care of with fresh food, an exceptional coffee, or a juicy cocktail – is our mission. Sabine is a place for people to gather, no matter the occasion.”

Sabine is open Sunday and Monday 8 p.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday and Saturday 8 a.m. to 11 p.m, with happy hour from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
