Copine to close in May after 10 years in Ballard

The fine-dining restaurant Copine (6460 24th Ave NW) will close permanently in 2026.

The owners announced the news on social media, saying May 30, 2026—the end of their current lease—will be its final day.

Co-owners Shaun McCrain and Jill Kinney opened Copine in 2016. McCrain was a chef at the now-closed Queen Anne restaurant Book Bindery before pivoting to open Copine.

Copine has received accolades over the years, including a James Beard Award nomination in 2023 for “Outstanding Restaurant.”

But despite its popularity, hints of closing came in July when the owners opened up about their challenges.

Back in July, they wrote:

“First, we are very grateful to have gotten to know so many of you. Whether yearly, monthly or weekly visitors, you have kept us going. Thank you for all of your support and enthusiasm. Second, economics have determined our next immediate step. These past 5 months of operating at a marked deficit have presented serious challenges, financial and otherwise.

“…The hospitality industry and the economy have both become so unpredictable that it’s very difficult to see a path forward – but the only way around is through. What happens over the next 6 months will help us determine our options as we enter 2026.”

For now, McCrain and Kinney said they’ll make some changes to “streamline” business and lower their overhead. They’ll continue their four-course offering from Wednesday to Saturday, and will also still offer their Takeaway Supper program for the last Sunday of each month.

In their message to customers about the closure, they wrote:

“Things trend up and down; we want to focus on the style of food and service that we do best for the remainder of our time here. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your memories over the years. We look forward to creating a few more in the coming months.”
