The heron colony at Commodore Park is growing yet again, with several nesting pairs returning to the park and laying their eggs in the trees next to the Ballard Locks.
The Heron Habitat Helpers are reporting that they spotted 39 herons near the newly constructed nests on Wednesday. “We know at least three pairs have already copulated so we should see incubation of eggs in 8-10 days,” they say.
This is a busy time for the HHH, and they could use some help: “We’re looking for enthusiastic citizen scientists to observe and record data on the large colony of great blue herons next to the Ballard Locks in Seattle,” they say. The hours will be a minimum of three hours, one day per week, from March to August. No previous experience is necessary; contact HHH at info@heronhelpers.org for more info.
They also have a work party coming up on Saturday, March 14; they’ll be weeding invasive species at Kiwanis Ravine, between Discovery Park and the Ballard Locks. (Here’s the sign-up form.)

My goodness, this post is too racy for me! Not sure I’ve ever seen “copulated” in a neighborhood blog. Brave new world!
Don’t worry. It only takes about 4 seconds.
LOL. A few helicoptering parents just cupped their little darlings ears. E2 is currently concocting a bird privilege theory too as I type.
