More Ballard utility boxes will be wrapped in designs by local artists in the coming months.
The Ballard Utility Box Beautification Project is organized by the Ballard Alliance and Ballard Public Art Committee. As part of the project, two local artists created designs that were wrapped on four utility boxes on NW Market St last year.
Now, the Ballard Alliance is putting a call out for new artists to provide designs for two more boxes: one at Ballard Commons and the other near QFC at the corner of 24th Ave NW and NW 57th St.
“These utility boxes are necessary for controlling electrical equipment and can be transformed from being anonymous elements of the urban landscape to displays of artwork and neighborhood identity by having them covered in digitally designed vinyl wraps,” the Ballard Alliance writes on their website. “These wraps not only bring an element of public art to the street, but they greatly reduce the amount of graffiti on the boxes and the maintenance hours required to clean them.”
The call for submissions is open now, and the deadline is April 22 at 5pm. Ballard Alliance will hold a public feedback process April 28 to May 5; we’ll update when they have designs/artists for consideration.
