Due to unhealthy air quality, Seattle Parks has closed outdoor facilities until Wednesday.
The City announced that all beaches, boat ramps, parks, and playfields will remain closed while unhealthy levels of wildfire smoke linger in the region. The air quality is expected to stay in the “unhealthy” to “very unhealthy” zone until mid-week, meaning it’s wise to stay inside with doors and windows closed until the smoke starts to clear.
The Human Services Department has partnered with public health departments and the Salvation Army to open an emergency smoke shelter at 1045 6th Avenue S. The shelter will be open through Wednesday, which may be extended depending on air quality conditions.
While outdoor facilities remain closed, Seattle Parks will keep park and beach restrooms open. The City will not be issuing citations for park use, but residents are, “strongly encouraged to avoid outdoor recreation and remain inside if they are able for the duration of the unhealthy air quality.”
Seattle Public Libraries will suspend curbside pickup service today, but the restrooms will remain open at the Ballard Branch from 10am to 6pm today.
An announcement from the City notes that face coverings used to help limit the spread of COVID-19 are not generally adequate for protecting against unhealthy air quality.

Holy smokes, our supreme commanders are showing their true skills. If it’s SO bad, then why not go full Monty and ban driving????????? It was non other than Rahm Emanuel that so eloquently told his boss, Obama, “to never let a good crisis go to waste”. Do we really need daddy telling us it’s bad and to stay inside? Perhaps a few more will be insulted by the omni-present overlords and their schtick.

If they keep the parks open then they would have to send employees out for maintenance, trash collection, etc. There could be legal repercussions to that.
I disagree with a blanket closure of the parks if it’s for public safety — the public can make their own decisions — but if it’s due to the inability to maintain the parks because of the employee health concerns, then that makes more sense.
Using the parks is fine, just as long as you stay in your tent.
