In another blow to the Ballard restaurant community, No Bones Beach Club has closed their location on 17th Ave NW due to the pandemic.
The vegan restaurant also closed their Portland location in late August for the same reasons: owner Mackenzie DeVito said it’s just not feasible to reopen either location. DeVito has another location in Chicago, which according to their website is temporarily closed.
“The restaurant industry I love with my soul has been stretched so thinly over the last few years, and it officially broke in 2020,” DeVito wrote in a letter to customers. “The COVID-19 pandemic has turned everyone’s world upside down. Like you, we are all devastated, exhausted and troubled by what is happening in our society today.”
No Bones Beach Club had its roots as a food truck: the No Bones About It truck started in 2014. Two years later, DeVito opened the Ballard No Bones Beach Club, along with locations in Portland and Chicago.
“I have weighed every last option to keep my employees and customers safe while still being able to feed you all, which is my daily passion,” DeVito wrote. “But the truth is that our tiny kitchen – the one that cooked an almost impossible amount of food on those bustling Saturdays all summer long- just wasn’t built for social distancing. We can’t safely turn out enough vegan bites to cover the cost.”
