Sports bar Slim Goody opening this weekend on Ballard Ave

A new sports bar is opening on Ballard Ave: It’s called Slim Goody, and it’s opening on Friday, July 19 in the former Great State Burger location at 5411 Ballard Ave.

Great State Burger closed in Feb. 2023—it’s been empty since Slim Goody announced its plans to open in April this year.

A group of Seattle residents and sports fans are behind Slim Goody, which they say aims to offer a blend of “nostalgia, camaraderie and elevated pub food” to Ballard Ave.

“We’re thrilled to bring Slim Goody to the heart of Old Ballard,” Jake Hoveland, Slim Goody’s general manager, said in a statement about the opening.

“Our goal is to create a welcoming spot where people can come together, enjoy great food and drinks, and make some memories. Whether you’re a die-hard sports fan or simply looking for a good meal and a good time, Slim Goody has something for everyone,” Hoveland said.

Slim Goody will have several TVs—”strategically” placed around the bar so every seat has a view of the action. It will have inside and outside seating, with two heated patios.

The food menu has some classic pub fare like chicken wings, burgers, salads, and fresh cheese curds, but they’re doing something a bit unique with the menu.

“We want what’s on the menu to reflect what’s on the screen,” Hoveland said. “So if the Seahawks are playing the Saints, you might see oyster po’ boys on game day. If the Mariners are in the playoffs
against the White Sox, Chicago-style hot dogs will be on the menu. When it’s Decision Day
in the Premiere League, we’ll have a full- English breakfast.”

The folks behind Slim Goody have a diverse background in the industry: Hoveland comes from Chainline Brewing and Good Brewing, chef Tony Hackett formerly worked at Stoneburner, and bar manager Chelan Gates hails from Ocho and Westward.

The bar will have 12 rotating taps, and patrons can join the “Mug Club” for extra membership perks.

For their opening weekend, Slim Goody will be open Friday and Saturday from 6 p.m. to 12 a.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
