The Fat Hen to close permanently in September

One of Ballard’s most beloved brunch spots is soon to close its doors: The Fat Hen (1418 NW 70th St,) will shut permanently in September.

The owners, Sammie and Cody Jeffs, announced the news on social media on Thursday, thanking customers for their nine-year run and saying the closing is “bittersweet.”

The original owners, Linnea and Massimo Gallo, opened The Fat Hen in 2011. The Jeffs took over from the Gallos in 2017.

Sammie told My Ballard that they closed due to “unsustainable costs of operating in Seattle,” which she says just continue to escalate.

“Additionally, and more importantly my partner and I have reached a state of severe burnout, exacerbated by the prolonged strain of the COVID era, leaving us no choice but to move forward in a different direction for our well-being,” she shared in a message.

Sammie hinted that the little cafe will continue to be a restaurant.

“While this decision brings a mix of emotions, including gratitude, happiness, and sorrow, we are comforted to know that a talented young individual will take over our space to launch a new concept. We are eager to see their vision come to life and are pleased to provide an opportunity for them to pursue their dreams. As they say, all good things must come to an end. And here we are.”

The Fat Hen’s last day open will be Sept. 13.
