Abandoned sailboat washes up at Golden Gardens

Folks visiting the north end of Golden Gardens today were surprised to discover an abandoned sailboat washed up on shore. Tom sent us this photo of beachgoers giving it a look. “It looks like a home-built sailboat that’s had a rough life in the last few days,” writes My Ballard reader Eric.

“The deck, keel and cabin have been ripped off, and the interior is completely gone, or was never finished in the first place. There wasn’t any water in it, which indicates that the bottom has some holes,” Eric said.

My Ballard reader Blaine emailed us Thursday to report that he saw the sailboat floating off shore. “It’s been there and visible for at least three days and today it is mostly submerged,” he said. A few days before that, Dan emailed to say he saw the boat “submerged to its cabin,” and the Coast Guard had checked to ensure there were no people in danger.

We’re checking with the Parks Department to see what they plan to do with the beat-up boat. (Thanks Eric, Tom, Blaine and Dan for your tips!)

  1. Sadly, it most likely basic dumping. Someone didn’t want to pay the bills or it was one of the marina’s getting rid of a boat that no one paid the bills on. It’s pretty amazing how many boat are just abandoned at docks and marinas. But there is a ton of paperwork to try to get rid of them.

  2. Could it be a boat used that was used in drug running? As meth dealers use the sound from everett to south sound to transport drugs.

  3. little dog:

Are you extremely stupid or were you trying to just be funny? Who was able to talk an idiot like yourself into believing that? Can you cite one single case where anyone was busted transporting meth inside the state by boat?

Smugglers do use the Sound and Strait as a route between here and Canada, and there have been arrests to prove it. I highly doubt that transportation of meth from everett to the south sound, say olympia, by boat is a popular. It just makes absolutely no sense. There is no border checkpoint to avoid defeating the purpose of traveling on water. You would actually be much safer and a lot less likely to be stopped by using a car as opposed to some home built crumbling sail boat.

  4. and little dog, if I didn’t know better your paranoia would prove me to think that maybe you need to put down that glass pipe.

  5. Wow, why don't they publish stories like this in the Seattle Times! I'm cancelling my subscription! Why should I pay good money for a paper when I can get this news for free!

  6. Eh? Dude, it's a human interest story on a neighborhood blog- what is your point? I live in Ballard and I love knowing the little details about what's happening in my hood, and I might even drag my little boys down to GG to take a look at this abandoned boat; hence the neighborhood blog holds interest for me. If it doesn't for you, than you are free to go back to the Times site and enjoy their brand of “hard hitting journalism” (watch out, their site is peppered with links back to this low brow blog). Do still cancel your subscription though, since you appear to have web access and surely you aren't foolish enough to pay for what is free (and worse you pay for the privilege of getting your news 12-24 hours after we have all already digested it from multiple other sources).

  7. Do you see the size of that kid's feet? When he grows into those shoes he's gonna' be the baddest dude on the block. That kid's got some serious attitude goin' on!

I predict multiple state championships for Ballard High football teams beginning in about 15 years!

  8. I reported that boat as a navigational hazard back when it was still afloat off Golden Gardens on Monday,March 8th. Good to see what good reporting to the coast Guard is. Basic waste of breath it appears.

  9. Hi guys, I know that boat! I kayaked around it probably a day before this photo was taken…I prefer to call it an almost sunken ship. Cool local reporting, thanks!
