I used to live in Belltown, and would walk the dog at Myrtle Edwards every morning. Someone did the same thing there. Along the rocks at the edge of the shore. It would go on for yards, and was very well organized. In mist it looked very creepy. Very blair witch. I suppose it does not have the same feel in a neighborhood. Those rocks look harmonious to me.
There's a homeless guy in Fremont, Benny, who specializes in this. For a while he had a bunch of stones across from Cafe Ladro.
We walked by this yard just this morning! There's a scrap metal fish sculpture just to the left of the cairns. Very nice!
Not far from this yard art is a house with trees made from beautiful blue and other colored bottles. Either they are celebrating their alcoholism, or somebody is a bartender! Either way the “trees” are pretty. ;-)
Hopefully the recycling truck won't knock them down…
very cool, must require a steady hand and a bit of patience. :)
These are called cairns and they are traditional Scottish (and Irish) monuments to mark paths, important waypoints, burials, etc. It is good karma to add another stone to the top.
One time I was at Ladro, like every morning, and that rock guy blew a fuse and threw a rock and hit a moving car. The driver stopped and was about to punch him out but realized he was insane when the rock guy started spinning around screaming and flinging his rocks all over. The cops took him away but he was back in a few weeks.
Kind of funny, but sad. It takes a lot of oversight to keep these guys on their meds.
Stacked rocks also can be found in Nepal. Years ago I spent a month trekking in that remarkable country and saw these “prayer rocks” everywhere, even in remote mountainous areas.
I live near this house and walk by the yard on the way to work. The artistic element is very prominent at this corner house, and adds nicely to the neighborhood. The stones are cool!
Looks like their landlord better replace their front steps/porch before it collapses, however.
The renters take better care of the property than the owner, in other words…
Plus, he used to use candle wax to help stick them together. Now I'm no rock stacking expert, but that seems like cheating in my book.
Yes, candle wax is cheating. But then again, Benny is very disturbed.
