A new online paddleboard rental company has come to Ballard, and just in time for summer.
Stoke Harvester owner Shawn Jennings says it’s a fantastic sport to try if you like spending time on the water. “It’s incredibly versatile, and easy to pick up. Plus, it’s a great core workout,” Jennings said.
Jennings will rent out boards from a beach near the Shilshole Bay Beach Club and at Magnuson Park on Lake Washington. He said he’ll be teaching morning and evening classes, and will have the boards on the beach for rentals throughout the day. The company will donate 20 percent of proceeds from rentals to the Ballard Elks. And, if you’re already an Elks member, your rental is 50 percent off.
More like Stoke Thief: setting up right across the street from Surf Ballard. Then again, maybe there’s enough demand for two SUP rental businesses on the same beach.
hmmm… isn’t competition the foundation of capitalism, our revered economic system? I seem to remember that from high-school economics.
My Surf Ballard t-shirt says “Stoke Harvester” on it. I thought that was their motto. Did this new outfit use Surf Ballard’s location, MO, /and/ motto? Are they related to Surf Ballard in some way?
I’m pretty sure Jennings was one of the original owners of Surf Ballard, and the motto “Stoke Harvester” is from a surf film. Stoke Harvester was also on the original Cheka-Looka Surf shop t-shirts….so I guess you could say it’s been around for awhile.
As far as location is concerned…people have been sand up paddle boarding and kayaking at that beach years before Surf Ballard showed up. In fact, the old flower shop guy down their was renting out boards at the location long before any official surf shop was on site.
You also have a group renting down at Golden Gardens this summer. I would say their is more than enough SUP rentals to go around. ;)
I’m pretty sure hockey is growing faster than stand-up paddling.
Kickboxing is clearly the sport of the future. All sport and surf shop drama aside, there’s plenty of room for more SUP rentals near Golden Gardens. Plenty of stoke to go around for everyone!
Sure, but jumping in on somebody else’s wave is likely to get your ass kicked if you’re surfing.
Thanks for clearing things up.
what happened to the flower guy? didnt he bring SUP to that spot in the first place? my wife and I lived across the street when he was out there rebuilding that old place for months, that guy really busted his ass on that place.
I say long live the surfing flower guy!!

The flower guy you speak of is none other than Seth Gerlitz! Both Seth, and Dug the pug will be helping us with rentals this summer. :)
