The 6th Annual Penny Harvest at Adams Elementary is now on, as students will gather as many pennies as possible over the next few weeks to donate to local charities. From now until Nov. 30, students will be accepting penny donations from the community. Their goal is to collect over 25 sacks of pennies. In January, a student leadership team from the school will lead Adams students in an effort to identify which projects in our community they want to fund with the money collected.
Ballard residents can contribute their pennies by delivering them to an Adams student or by dropping them off in the school office, Monday through Friday, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. The Penny Harvest program was started by Common Cents, a non-profit that, “shows young people they have the ability to make the world a better place by introducing them to the power of philanthropy and service during their formative years,” according to the Adams Elementary newsletter.
Last school year, Adams donated to charities such as Wellspring Family Services ($300), Puget Soundkeeper Alliance ($300), PAWS ($200), and Guide Dogs for the Blind Seattle Puppy Raisers ($200).
