For several years, the corner of NW 65th St. and 7th Ave NW has been a fenced-off empty lot, accumulating weeds, garbage and graffiti. The East Ballard Community Association (EBCA) and Friends of 65th are trying to change that – they’ve applied for the Seattle Parks and Green Spaces Levy Opportunity Fund to purchase the property and turn it in to a park.

“With the density of this neighborhood rapidly increasing and shifting to young families with children, the need for a public green space accessible without crossing a busy arterial is imperative,” writes Dawn Hemminger with the EBCA. The group, along with Friends of 65th, has two upcoming meetings to gain support and to try to convince the city to purchase the land while the owners are still willing to sell. The first meeting is on Friday, Jan. 25 at 6 p.m. at 6221 5th Ave NW, where they’ll be discussing the vision of the park with friends and neighbors and making signs to carry at the Parks Levy Oversight Committee Open House on Monday, Jan. 28 at 6 p.m. at the Northgate Community Center (10510 5th Ave NE).
Hemminger asks that if you plan to attend either meeting, RSVP to Carolyn Swenson at swenson_carolyn@yahoo.com.
