Free trees available to Seattle residents

couple with treesThe City of Seattle’s Trees for Neighborhoods program is starting up again, which means the city will be giving away 1,000 trees to residents. The application for trees opens tomorrow (Wed. July 31), and recipients can be given up to four trees, free watering bags for each tree, and training on how to plant and maintain trees.

The program has been running since 2009, and 3,300 trees have been planted on private properties through the Trees for Neighborhoods giveaway. The trees range from fruit trees to evergreens and street trees. This year, the program will offer 13 different tree species, including  Galaxy Magnolia, Tall Stewartia, Emerald Sunshine Elm, Mountain Hemlock, June Snow Dogwood, and Honey Crisp Apple trees. See the complete tree list here. The applications will be open tomorrow, and street tree applications will be accepted through Sept. 1. Yard tree applications are due Oct. 11, and there will be planting workshops and tree pickups on Oct. 19 and Nov. 3.
