The Heron Habitat Helpers organization is looking to fill a vacant position on their board. Sue Gillespie, president of the group, says they’re looking for a person who, “loves the great blue heron, has great energy and lots of good ideas, and enjoys working with others to bring increased awareness of this iconic bird.” To find out more, contact Gillespie at president@heronhelpers.org for details.
The group was founded in 2001 by two women who wanted to protect the local heron colony. The group was originally part of the Friends of Discovery Park group, and founded by Donna Kostka and Heidi Carpine, who thought that the building of a street near a local heron colony in Kiwanis Ravine would jeopardize the nests. The group has since helped raise awareness of the great blue heron over the years, including working with the Seattle Audubon Society to have the heron declared Seattle’s “Official City Bird.” More recently, the group has been working to develop nest viewing stations in Discovery Park and the Ballard Locks; click here to take a short survey to help the group establish the best viewing locations.
