A Ballard High School physics teacher is interested in starting a low-power FM radio station in Ballard, and is looking for people who are interested in helping get it started. Eric Muhs says he’s been involved with low-power radio stations before, and says there’s an opportunity to organize a licensed station for our neighborhood. “My vision is for a community-based radio,” Muhs tells us. “I’d like to cast a net out and see if there are other Ballard folks that might like to work on this.”
A low-power FM station is radio that broadcasts at 100 watts or less, which means its reach would be about three miles. The Slog had a recent article about low-power FM (“What Could Low-Power FM Radio Do Here in Seattle?“) because the FCC will begin offering licenses for small radio stations this fall. According to the Slog, it’s free to apply for a license, and if you get it, the license itself is also free.
