A design review meeting will be held next Monday, December 16, to discuss the construction of a 7-story mixed use structure on the current site of Ballard Bartell’s Drug Store (5601 22nd Ave NW). The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Ballard Community Center (6020 28th Ave NW) and all are welcome to attend.
Henbart LLC currently owns the Ballard Bartell’s property and, according to its President Mark Craig, the company plans to construct a 7-story mixed use building that will feature residential and office space above a ground level of retail outlets. According to city documents, the building is set to feature 78 apartments, four townhouses, 20,000 sq. ft. of office space and two levels of underground parking with 131 spaces.
The My Ballard team initially covered the development late last month in our weekly development update post with information from the DPD’s Land Use Bulletin.
A new Bartell’s store is set to open on the ground floor of Urbana Apartments on the corner of NW Market St and 15th Ave NW. However, Craig could not confirm whether or not the current Bartell’s location would remain open when construction begins on the multi use structure project, which at this point is scheduled for 2015.
An informal open house was held last Monday evening at Ballard Library to discuss the project with locals. “We wanted to answer any questions that the community might have about the project and share the proposed plans for the multi use structure,” said Craig.
Although the future of the current Bartell’s site is unknown, there is an exciting development in the works for the new Bartell’s location at Market and 15th. This new location is set to feature a “CareClinic” operated through a partnership between Bartell’s and Group Health Cooperative. The new clinic is one of three that are opening between mid-January and early March in Seattle, the others being at U Village and at Crossroads in Bellevue.
According to our news partners The Seattle Times, the clinics will be staffed by Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners (ARNPs) and will charge a $75 per visit flat rate to patients over two years old for common ailments including colds and flu, sinus infections, allergies, burns, rashes and cuts, pinkeye, sore throat, head lice, warts, sprains and strains, bronchitis, ear infections and urinary-tract and intestinal infections. The clinic will provide a walk-in service for patients and they will not have to be Group Health members to receive care.
If you are unable to attend the design review meeting for the proposed development at the current Bartell’s site you can provide your feedback on the development by emailing PRC@seattle.gov before 5 p.m. on December 16.
The My Ballard team will continue to update readers with information after the meeting is held.
I hope someone has noticed that a 7 story building to the south of Ballard Commons will produce a significant shadow on the park. Do the Building Permit people consider how much sky is being blocked out by 6 to 8 story apartment buildings.
We are becoming the Grand Canyon of Ballard.
