Seattle City Council Member Sally Bagshaw emailed in to report that SDOT has created a free street permit process that can be easily attained to close neighborhood streets for block parties and other community events.
“SDOT has made it easy for neighborhoods to close streets for fun events including block parties, sporting days, school fun runs and more,” writes Council Member Bagshaw.
Previously the application required a $75 fee and an inspection from SDOT prior to the event.
Locals can obtain permits to close neighborhood streets as long as the street is not an arterial or a bus route. The permit requires that organizers clean up and restore the street before 10pm and residents are unable to request more than one block party per month for the same block.

This took effect in 2008. Has anything changed?
ooh you GO sally! just what sort of community hardship shall you assist with next?
I have extremely boring neighbors. Fml
How fast can I get one of these permits?
I live near the Ballard Community Center.
I would love to shut my block down this Saturday so all the Norwegian interlopers from the hinterlands don’t clog my street with their Volvos and such.
