This week we thought we would focus on something that is close to Ballard’s current heart, soul and stomach.
Wonder if Ballard restaurants back in the day had good happy hour offerings?
The black and white photo below, taken in 1900, shows three men standing in front of “Jack’s Restaurant.” The exact location of the restaurant in Ballard is not documented.
The black and white photo below, taken in 1892, shows Hans Nelson with his son Nels Nelson outside the hotel, bar and restaurant that he owned on the corner of Dock Place and Ballard Avenue.
The black and white photo below, taken in 1937, shows the “Old Home” restaurant that was located at 5231 Ballard Avenue, where Hattie’s Hat now stands.
The below black and white photo from 1925 shows a group of ladies outside the Fern Café in Ballard.
The black and white photo below, taken in 1900, shows a man and a child sitting on the steps of the “End of the Line” restaurant in Ballard.

The Fern Cafe was located where the New York Fashion Academy is, but just the south part on 22nd. The brick pattern on the NYFA appears to be the same as that on Jack’s Restaurant, so possibly the Fern was Jack’s previously.

More hipster restaurants?
Does anyone remember the Scandinavian restaurant in Ballard in the 80’s called “Versgo”? I may have the spelling wrong.It offered a 7 course dinner.It was at 22nd and Market.
