With SeafoodFest celebrating its 40th anniversary this weekend, this week’s throwback takes a look at some images of Ballard’s fishing heritage over the past 100+ years.
The black and white photo below, taken in 1890, shows “Knut the Emigrant” standing on a dock near some fishing nets, holding two fish.
The black and white photo below, taken in 1930, shows an assembly line at an unknown fish packing company, where a line of women are filleting fish.
The black and white photo below, taken in 1910, shows Opening Day at Fishermen’s Terminal. A crowd of people lined up under umbrellas on dock, and in front of them, long line of fishing boats, many decorated with flags.
The black and white photo below, taken on March 26, 1944, shows the Salmon Bay fishing fleet. Nets are dried in long rows on the piers. In the right foreground are glass floats used instead of scarce cork. Flags at the left are net markers.
