Detectives are searching for a man who fired several shots during an attempted robbery early this morning in the Ballard neighborhood.
Witnesses said the suspect approached a woman on the street near NW Market St and Ballard Ave NW around 12:15 AM and attempted to take her necklace. As the woman struggled with the suspect, a doorman from a nearby club [Bal Mar] intervened. The suspect then pulled out a handgun and fired several rounds into the ground before fleeing the area.
Officers arrived and found three people had sustained minor injuries after they were struck by ricocheting fragments from the suspect’s bullets. The victims went to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Police scoured the neighborhood for the suspect, but were unable to find him.
Police are still working to gather more details about the suspect—witnesses described him only as a black male in his 20s—and robbery detectives are asking for anyone with information to call (206) 684-5535.
The crime caused quite a scene at 12:13 a.m. August 8 and the gunshots fired were audible from several blocks away.
Many concerned readers wrote in about the disturbance, one reader Cory Hopkins saying he heard what sounded like three firecracker bangs from inside the On the Park Apartments.
The three people injured have been treated for their wounds, and generally Ballard has been optimistic about the outcome of the event which easily could have turned tragic.
“I think all of us were really relived that no one got shot,” Bal Mar employee Brooks Becker said, according to KOMO news.
