Ballard brewery Lucky Envelope (907 NW 50th St) will host a Mid-Autumn Festival on Sept. 30., a harvest festival celebrated in Asia. For the festival, they’ll be serving a small batch lotus seed paste beer release inspired by mooncake, which are a baked delicacy eaten during the festival and traditionally made from lotus seed paste.
The Mid-Autumn Festival is meant to bring family and friends together and to give thanks for the autumn harvest, a tradition close to the heart of co-founder Raymond Kwan. “When I lived in Los Angeles near my grandmother, it was family tradition for us to get together for the Mid-Autumn Festival and Chinese New Year celebrations” Kwan said. “Everybody loved our Historic Mijiaya Chinese Beer released earlier this year, so we thought it would be fun to share our mooncake-inspired lotus seed paste beer during the Mid-Autumn Festival.”
The brewery will be giving the first 30 guests who come in on the day of the festival a lucky envelope with a special coupon inside. They’ll also be giving away free mooncakes while supplies last. Also on tap will be a nine-month aged vanilla imperial milk stout.
A bit of background on Lucky Envelope: it takes its name from the Chinese tradition – tied closely with the Lunar New Year celebration – of elders bestowing often red-and-gold envelopes to loved ones as a gesture of luck and goodwill.
